THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLE DAYS
AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT HEARS FROM THEIR KIDS THIS LITTLE GEM?
“I’M BORED” WAIT A MIN HERE, YOUR WHAT!? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH OUR CHILDREN TODAY!?
I KNOW, I KNOW THAT COULD TAKE A LONG TIME TO ANSWER, BUT REALLY I CAN’T BE THE ONLY PERSON THAT AS A CHILD WAS ENTERTAINED FOR HOURS WITH SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS AN EMPTY CARDBOARD REFRIGERATOR BOX.
WHAT HAPPENED TO A LITTLE THING CALLED…IMAGINATION? YOU KNOW, MR. ROGERS TAUGHT US THE MAGICAL WORLD OF MAKE BELIEVE…AND HOW TO TIE YOUR SHOES! FOR THE LOVE OF PETE WE COULD STAY OUTSIDE AND PLAY ALL DAY WITH NOTHING BUT OUR IMAGINATION!
OK LET’S THINK BACK HERE, NOT TOO FAR BACK, I’M NOT THAT OLD…YET. OK PICTURE THIS, OUTSIDE WITH ALL THE NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS, EACH OF YOU ARE PLAYING THE ROLE OF YOUR FAVORITE SUPER HERO OR VILLAIN.
MAKING CAPES OUT OF TOWELS AND WEAPONS OUT OF WHATEVER LOOKS GOOD. SPENDING ALL DAY ON IMPORTANT MISSIONS, ONLY STOPPING LONG ENOUGH TO TAKE A PISS OR GRAB A SANDWICH, OR DEBATE ON WHO BRAVELY ASKS THEIR PARENTS FOR ENOUGH MONEY TO GO TO THE CORNER STORE TO GET CANDY FOR ALL OF YOU TO FIGHT OVER.
YES, THOSE WERE THE DAYS! NOW WE HAVE OUR KIDS IN FRONT OF A COMPUTER, OR ON THE PHONE COMPLAINING TO EACH OTHER ABOUT HOW BORED THEY ARE.
NOW DON’T GET ME WRONG HERE, I KNOW THE WORLD HAS BECOME UNSAFE TO WANDER AROUND THE WAY WE DID. NOW YOU HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT A PEDOPHILE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD THAT YOU CANNOT HARASS, DO TO “THEIR RIGHTS” IF IT WAS UP TO ME I WOULD SHOVE “THEIR RIGHTS” UP THEIR ASS AND THEN PROCEED TO LINE THEM UP FOR A LITTLE PUBLIC STONING, A LITTLE PROCESS I BELIEVE SHOULD BE BROUGHT BACK.
ANYWAY, THE POINT HERE IS, HAVE WE FAILED IN TEACHING OUR KIDS THE ART OF IMAGINATION? OR IS IT BECAUSE THERE ARE TOO MANY “GADGETS” AND TOYS OF TECHNOLOGY THAT EASILY ENTERTAINS THEM?
EITHER WAY, I THINK THOSE OF US WHO WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO GROW UP IN THE WORLD OF MAKE BELIEVE SHOULD TAKE SOME TIME OUT OF OUR BUSY DAYS AND REMEMBER THOSE FUN TIMES. SHARE SOME STORIES WITH YOUR KIDS, EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL LAUGH AT YOU OR ROLL THEIR EYES. AND ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS. “STAY GOLD PONYBOY, STAY GOLD” please click the link to give me a point!

HELLO LOVELY SISTER.....FIRST OF ALL, WHO THE FUCK IS PONY BOY?
OK, NOW I AM SOOOO GLAD TO HEAR THAT THE ENDLESS DAYS OF US PLAYING OUTSIDE HAS HAD SUCH A POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOUR MEMORIES OF OUR PAST. YOU MUST HAVE FORGOTTEN THE DAYS YOUR HORRIBLE BROTHER SHOVED YOU DOWN A STORM SEWER, OR BROKE YOUR NOSE WITH A TENNIS RACKET, OR SET FIRE TO THE NEIGHBORS HOUSE WITH A PRECISIONLY AIMED BOTTLE ROCKET WHILE SITTING ON THE FRONT STEPS WATCHING THE GRANDEUR OF FIREMEN PUTTING OUT THE INFERNO.
OR MAYBE ALL THAT HAS BEEN BLOCKED OUT DUE TO THE FACT OF THE HARBORING MEMORY OF INTRODUCING MY FOREHEAD WITH THE SHIT SHOVEL YOU WEILDED LIKE ACHILLES, LEAVING ME WITH THIS SYNICAL MIND (YOUR FAULT), I'M TELLING MOM.
I WILL SIDE WITH YOU 100% THAT OUR SUFFERING BASTARDS HAVE BEEN SHELTERED TO THE POINT OF BOREDOM DUE TO OUR EVER CHANGING SOCIETY, BUT I AM NOT SURE IT TAKES AWAY THIER IMAGINATION, IT JUST DIRECTS IT INTO DIFFERENT AVENUES THAT DON'T REQUIRE AS MUCH PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT OR BEING OUTSIDE. OR WE ARE RAISING A BUNCH OF LAZY BASTARDS....WHICHEVER YOU WANT TO BELIEVE. I'M GOING WITH THE FORMER BECASUE I LOVE TO LIVE IN IGNORANT BLISS.
XOXO
Hello there Precious
Pony Boy is something I have not heard or thought of in many years. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!!! I do agree with you that our children do not seem to possess the imagination that we all did when we were their age. But whose fault is it...I believe that we as parents are to blame for the lack of imagination and growth of laziness in our children. Did your 14 year old really pay for her own IPOD or did my 16 year old pay for the Wii???? Doubt it, we have allowed our children to become lazy and unimaginative and to make matters worse we have provided them to tools to do so. If they are not parked in front of the television watching Little Einsteins at the age of 2 our society would think that we were stunting their early developement. And if they do not have the latest and greatest electronics and games as teenagers we have totally ruined them for life, because now what on earth would they IM their buddy's or text to their friends (when grounded from the computer) to discuss. I have never heard a kid talk to their friends about building a fort or playing a game outside, but I have heard about websites and magazines that offer cheat codes for video games.
I don't disagree that things are much different know than they used to be, the Kaleigh era changed us all and the freedom we are willing to allow our children.
Caps lock is not your friend.
And gods I hate ponyboy.
On the other hand I agree with you, and I think I might be one of those annoying brats you are ranting about. Not all of us are or were like that you know, and it depends how a child is raised. TV is most definitly evil.
